Six countries have built most of the world’s zipline, and they built it over different things.
Mexico strings its lines over sinkholes. Thailand runs them through teak canopy. Turkey sells them inside a rafting day, the Dominican hills drop them towards the sea, Hawaii hangs them off waterfalls and New Zealand fenced a forest around them.
In Mexico the zipline usually finishes in a cenote.

A zipline can turn you away at the harness. Check this before you pay.
Every course runs a scale and a tape. There is a minimum weight, because a light rider stalls halfway down the cable and has to be hauled in, and a maximum the brake is rated for. Add an age floor, closed shoes, tied hair, nothing loose in a pocket. Wind and lightning shut a line at an hour’s notice, and most operators would rather move you than run it.
Three rides you only get at the end of a cable.
A mountain view comes with a chairlift. A landing in a sinkhole, a kilometre of steel at seventy miles an hour and a seat swung out over a gorge do not.
The Record Spans
A small number of operators have built spans long enough that you are in the air for most of a minute and fast enough that the seat comes with a brake at the far end. They tend to come in pairs, one run out and one run back, with a truck or a cable car to get you up to the launch. Slovenia and Colorado both claim records; the Alpine ones are the ones with the drop underneath.

The Cenote Drop
A cenote is a collapsed cave roof with groundwater sitting in the bottom, and the Yucatán has thousands of them. Parks near Cancun and Tulum run their last line straight over the opening: some let you off on the far rim, the better ones release the trolley and drop you in. The water holds the same cool temperature all year and you swim out to a ladder.

The Valley Swing
Bali made these famous and the rest of the tropics copied it: a seat on two long ropes, a push off the edge, and an arc out over a gorge or a rice terrace.
